What We Want Changes

Sometimes What We Want Changes

It’s funny how we outgrow what we once thought we couldn’t live without, and then fall in love with what we didn’t even know we wanted. Life keeps leading us on journeys we would never go on if it were up to us. Don’t be afraid. Have faith. Find the lessons.

God is not a God of chaos but of peace. (1 Corinthians 14:33)

This is Important!

And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And This! And This!” And each day it is up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what’s important.” (Ian Thomas)

Let your eyes look directly ahead, And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. (Proverbs 4:25)

Choose Your Battles

Don’t Tire Out Before the Ones that Matter

Don’t Tire Early

Choose your battles wisely because if you fight them all, you’ll be too tired to win the really important ones.

Preparation for Battle

When I think about going into battle, pictures of swords, horses, and armor fill my mind. I think about the physical process of getting ready and the mental stamina needed to prepare for what might be a grueling task.

It is okay not to fight in every battle you are invited to. Choosing not to engage does not count as a loss.

The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent. (Exodus 14:14)

Don’t Let Your Ship Sink

Ships don’t sink because of the water around them;  ships sink because of the water that gets in them.  Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.

Don’t Let Negativity In

Little by little, almost so gradually that we hardly notice it, negativity from the world around us has the ability to take a hold of us if we don’t keep an eye out for it.  Negativity that takes a hold of us from the world makes it difficult to cultivate a life that will inspire others.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2)

I was Different

“I could tell you my adventures-  beginning from this morning,” but it’s no use going back to yesterday because I was a different person then. (Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland)

We Did the Best We Knew How

We do the best we know how until we have new information or have had an experience that gives us a new outlook.

Love Yourself as You Would Others

1 Corinthians 13:5 reminds us when we have love and compassion for ourselves, we are not to be easily angered, nor keep a record of wrongs.

Simple

“The most complicated skill is to be simple.”― Dejan Stojanovic

Considering the Word Simple

The word simple is defined as saying “To make something easy to understand or do.  It is not to do something in a complex or fancy way”.  I have often heard people say when planning an event, that they want to keep it simple.

As I thought about the word simple, I was intrigued and pondered why it is such a skill to keep events, relationships, health, words, productivity, faith, and lifestyle to the point and uncomplicated.

Simplicity Frees us of Confusion

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that when words and ideas are carefully chosen, leaving out anything unnecessary, there is a challenge to be disciplined without excuses.  We are given the opportunity to be freed of any confusion and have the opportunity to see a clear path in the direction we want to go.  God’s word is packed with several short verses that very articulate His message.

Sometimes the simplest verses are the most complex.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 reads,  “Rejoice always, pray continually”.

Hard Days

Meaning in Hard Days

Yesterday a friend of mine sent me a link to the country artist, Brantley Gilbert’s new song, “Hard Days”.  The lyrics seemed so real, and easy to relate to.  The chorus reads, “ If you never had hard days, never had a heartbreak, never had more than you can take, or carried the weight of life on your shoulders-  Would you feel like you earned it, would you feel like you live with a purpose, or ever known your strength if you never had hard days?”

More Than We Can Handle

God tells us that he will never give us more than we can handle.  Looking at the difficulty in our life some days, as well as some of the things other people face, that doesn’t always feel accurate.  However, the key part of his promise is that if He helps us there is no limit to what we can handle.

So, when it feels like things are beyond our control and testing what we can manage, that is God saying, “Let me help you during the Hard Days”.

The Joy That’s Coming

The Hard Days make the Good Days so much better.  The really tough moments that bring you to your knees and make you feel like you can’t do anymore, are the prequel to the thousand average and really good moments that make life seem amazing!

James 8:18 reminds us, “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that’s coming.”

Actions Speak Louder than Words

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”  (John F. Kennedy)

Devotion in the Things We Do Each Day

I have heard the phrase, “Actions speak louder than words”, more times than I can count.  At a young age, I remember this message being conveyed from not only my parents but in school, on TV and in books I read.

Writer, Ashley Fern says, “Love is sustained by action, a pattern of devotion in the things we do for each other every day.  People may not tell you how they feel about you, but they always show you.  Pay attention.  And, people may verbally stop talking, but always continue saying something by what they do.”

Our God Does What He Says

Fortunately, we have a God who expresses love by what He says and does.  He never stops talking.  Our Father tells us that he loves us, will take care of us, and help us through every single part of our lives.  And then, by His example everything He said he was going to do happens.  While we are far from ever being able to carry out the actions that align perfectly with our words, we take pride in knowing that we are working on it by noticing His perfect example.

Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity and dignity(Titus 2:7).

Believe in Tomorrow

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.  (Audrey Hepburn)

Gardening Is Essential

Throughout the years gardens have been essential to life.  Not only have they provided avenues for us to grow food, but they allow us to create beauty, a healthier environment, and produce oxygen.  Additionally, gardens provide significant mental health benefits.

There is purpose in planting.

Genesis 1:11-12 reads, “And God said, ‘Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.’ And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”

Be Present and Believe in the Future

When something is planted and an environment is tended to, it is because there is a hope of its flourishing for future days.  We can lean into the present as we prepare an environment and plant something but yet do so with the intention that we believe in the future.

By the Seeds You Plant

Don’t Judge Each Day by the Harvest You Reap but by the Seeds That You Plant. -Robert Louis Stevenson

We Might Not See the Return on the Seeds Planted

We may never end up able to see the full return on the seeds we have planted. But, if we don’t plant very many seeds, we can be guaranteed that our future harvest will be very small.

Consider measuring accomplishments not only by the end product but by the potential created.

Plant Seeds Each Day

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9).
